This is real case happens to a friend of mine and I'm posting it here to create security awareness in the community.
My friend was picking up her children from school today (19 Nov 2009) as usual. On her way back from school, she received a call from mobile phone (019-843 5667). When she answer the call, there was a child's voice cried out "mommy, mommy help, someone is beating me."
My friend told me she was calm at that moment because all her children is with her in the car at that moment. She replied asking the child to calm down and she would call the police for help. The child replied - don't call the police, you came and help me quick...
She did not fall for the scam, as she was warn by other parents having similar experience earlier on. Normally when we heard of such scam rarely we could relate it would happens to us.
For parents with schooling children, if their children were not with them the moment they received this type of call would definitely made them worry, panic and could even fall for the scam. There seem to be a syndicate going around trying to extort money from unsuspecting parents.
I tried to call the number given, nobody answer, it went into voice mail.
What to do when this happens:
1) Stay calm, first thing first, look for your children to ensure their safety.
2) Report to police even nothing happens to you, make the stats count. This is one of the way to force the police to track them down. All mobile phone line in Malaysia are registered to someone. All phone numbers are tracable to owner if the police take action.
It happen here in Malaysia. Please pass on the message to your friends with children to warn them of the syndicate.
